Shield Care & Use Guide

At Vildnfri, we craft our shields with care, tradition, and durability in mind. Made from pine planks, secured with hand-forged wrought iron nails, and fitted with a 14-gauge steel boss (umbo), our shields are built to be battle ready, functional, and striking in appearance.

But like any real gear, they need to be used responsibly and maintained with care. Here’s how to get the most out of your shield.

Use Guide

Built for Strength, Not for Sport Combat

Our shields are made to be strong, functional, and durable. They are tested for strength and capable of standing up to heavy use—but we do not recommend using them for actual combat.

  • These shields are not approved for SCA combat due to the cut tacks used to secure the rawhide edging. The concern is that a tack could come loose during full-contact sparring and cause injury.

  • We also recommend against striking others or allowing your shield to be used in uncontrolled impact situations.

  • Always wear proper protection when training or performing with a shield—especially for your eyes, head, limbs, and hands.

Shield Strength & Natural Variation

Each Vildnfri shield is battle-tested and made for real use. However, they are built from natural materials, such as wood and rawhide. Variations in grain, moisture, and temperature can affect each shield slightly. We stand behind the craftsmanship of our shields, but we cannot guarantee performance in all conditions or impacts.

Weather & Environment

Our shields are finished with durable exterior-grade paint and stain. They can handle rain, heat, and other typical weather conditions during use. However, they should not be left outdoors for extended periods or stored in damp environments. Long-term exposure to the elements can lead to:

  • Warping or cracking

  • Fading or wear of the painted finish

  • Rusting of metal components

Care & Maintenance

Oil the Metal Components

To prevent rust, oil your shield boss (umbo) and cut tacks periodically—especially after rain, humidity, or long-term storage.

We recommend using 3-IN-ONE oil or a similar light machine oil. Simply apply a light coat with a clean cloth and wipe away excess.

Avoid using mineral oil or vegetable-based oils, which can go rancid or leave a residue.

Cleaning Your Shield

  • Use a damp cloth or soft sponge to gently clean dirt or debris.

  • Avoid harsh scrubbing, as it can damage the paint or wear down the stained back.

  • Let your shield air dry completely before storing it.

Storage Tips

  • Store your shield indoors in a dry area.

  • Do not store flat on the ground for extended periods—this can encourage warping.

  • If possible, hang it vertically or store it upright to maintain shape.

Our Commitment

Each Vildnfri shield is handcrafted to reflect both traditional construction methods and modern durability. We make them to be used, admired, and passed from one adventurer to the next.

Whether you’re training, performing, reenacting, or displaying, your shield is built to serve you well—if you take care of it.

Be wild & free. Shield up.
